Couples Therapy for Depression (CTfD)
What is Couples Therapy for Depression (CTfD)?
There are lots of reasons why a relationship may not feel stable and fulfilling including money worries, job stresses, health problems and big changes like moving house and becoming parents. It’s not always easy to navigate these types of changes and challenges and this can sometimes have a negative impact on your mental health and lead to symptoms of depression.
Couples Therapy for Depression is a type of Evidence Based Therapy recommended by NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence) and is frequently used in the NHS.
Couples therapy can help you with:
Understanding how depression affects you and your partner in your relationship.
Reducing relationship distress.
Understanding yourself and your partner better overall.
Understanding patterns of behaviours that can cause struggle and conflict.
Understanding and overcoming barriers to intimacy.
Helping you to feel closer and more connected with your partner.
Exploring ways to adjust to life events, stressors, and changes.
Overcoming symptoms of depression by tackling triggers within the relationship.
Learning new ways to communicate in your relationship.
Approaching difficult topics of conversation in a safe and non-judgemental space.
What are couples therapy sessions like?
Couples Therapy sessions last for 60 minutes. In early sessions I will carry out an assessment to understand more about you, your relationship, and the difficulties you are experiencing. We will then set goals and use our remaining sessions to tackle issues to move you towards achieving those goals. Except for session 2 and 3 which are individual sessions, all other sessions must be attended by both people in the relationship.
